Dive Bar Heaven

No matter how highbrow, now and then everyone needs a good “dive bar” experience. I don’t mean the type of glamorized, stylized dive bars designed to attract the Bridge and Tunnel set. I am talking about a proper, cheap beer, cheap shots, don’t-even-think-about-drinking-the-wine, old Aerosmith on the jukebox, type of dive bar. Unfortunately, those types of places are almost invariably in areas too far away (or too scary) for Manhattanites to get to. You may never have guessed, but smack dab in the middle of “highbrow heaven” sits the Subway Inn.

The Subway Inn, across from Bloomies, is a dive bar heaven. Red vinyl booths, an ancient jukebox and checkerboard lino tiles have changed little in the past several decades. But than people don’t come for the ambiance. One of the cheapest watering holes in town, the Subway Inn is the perfect place to stop for a drink while contemplating how much you have spent on shopping.
