At least once a month, my sister and I meet in midtown for a lunch and Brooklyn Dinner is one of our favorites. Don’t let the name fool you, the Brooklyn Dinner is no greasy spoon. This restaurant takes the charm of a 50’s style dinner and some of the food favorites (hot dogs, burgers, and meatloaf) and adds a level of sophistication essential for jaded New Yorkers. Almost always packed, this charming midtown eatery features grown-up versions of the classics and a nice wine selection. While the 15 bite hotdog is always popular as is the meatloaf and of course cheeseburgers, this is not the corner coffee shop. Everything is masterfully prepared and beautifully presented. The meatloaf is sumptuous with peppers and a creamy gorgonzola, the hot dog is substantial and juicy.
The atmosphere is charming; stained glass and blonde woodwork abound and each table or booth is adorned with brass plaques listing the famous people who have also sat at that table. Service is friendly and efficient and the staff is gracious. But the food is the real draw. I adore the Cuban Skirt Steak. Tender and flavorful with delicate lime and cilantro, and served up with red beans and rice, the steak is worth the wait. My sister almost always orders the Maryland Crab Cake Club sandwich. Any trip to the Brooklyn Dinner must include desert. While they rave over the Blonde Cheesecake, my personal favorite is the Double Layer Coconut Cake. While more expensive than the corner coffee shop the food is well worth the wait and the price.
