In few places on earth is space more of an issue than it is in New York City. Apartments are notoriously small and closet space is either non-existent or at a real premium. It is no wonder that so many people’s possessions literally spill out into the hallways. While the main culprits are bikes, strollers, and sporting equipment, some people see the hallway in front of their front door as their own personal space. Some look to beautify the space with tables and plants. Others see the hallway as an extension of laundry facilities and hang drying clothing on every available surface.
No matter if you see the hallway as additional storage or a space to show off your decorating skills, it is illegal to place anything in the hallway. By law, hallways need to be clear to prevent fire hazards and to provide emergency personnel access. Storing your bike or stroller in the hall or hanging out your laundry may keep your apartment tidy, but aside from making theft easy, it can result in death or injury to you or your neighbors in the event of a fire or other disaster.
Almost every hardware store or house wares department carries over-the-door or wall mounted bike or stroller racks. Consider renting a storage locker for seldom used sporting equipment. Folding clothes dryer racks are cheap and easy to use. Don’t risk a ticket (many buildings are cracking down) or put the lives of your family and neighbors at risk. Keep the hallways clean and clear.
