How can I go to the Hamptons over the summer?

I LOVE NEW YORK CITY! But there is nothing quite as nice as sneaking away from the concrete and steel in the summer to hang out on Long Island. Delightful villages, balmy breezes, stunning beaches, and of course a terrific social scene, make LI the place to be. But, if you don’t have a wealthy friend with a beach house, how do you find a place to spend your vacation time?

START LOOKING NOW! The best houses are booked up years in advance and by summer time, you can hardly find the space to pitch a tent.

CHOOSE RESPONSIBLE HOUSEMATES Most people need a group in order to rent a beach or village house. With rents for decent places running in the thousands of dollars for a week, you need to know that the housemates aren’t going to back out at the last minute, leaving you in financial crisis.

BE FLEXIBLE: Some of the nicest houses available will be off the beaten path a bit and some weeks are more in demand (and more expensive) than others.

BE SMART: People can get so carried away with the idea of the perfect LI summer rental that they leave their common sense at the door. If possible, go check out the house in advance of renting it. Work with a reputable agency.

Maybe more importantly however is to be practical. The Hamptons are very expensive. Is a week crammed in with a half dozen others in a small house worth the thousands that it will cost? There are many places to summer that are a lot more financially feasible that offer much more bang for the buck.
