The Nouveau Native Girls LOVE the holidays. But with the month being the most stressful and expensive time of the year we though that we would run down our TOP TEN things to do this December. As a bonus some are completely FREE!
10. Museums! A stunning origami tree at the Natural History Museum, a medieval crèche at the Met, and trees, music and chorals at museums across the city make December an excellent time to get culture.
9. Christmas at South Street Seaport. Aside from great shopping, fab restaurants, and a super view, this holiday season the South Street Seaport is offering 19th Century Caroling and traditional seasonal entertainment.
8. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular. You’ve got the Rockettes, you’ve got music, and you have the amazing radio City Music Hall. If you have never been, you must go. If you have, take some out-of-towner guests as an excuse and go again.
7. The Big Apple Circus at Lincoln Center. Everyone loves a circus and the Big Apple Circus rivals the Barnum and Bailey for entertainment value. Take the kids for a real treat.
6. The holiday window displays at all major department stores. Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Saks, Barney’s, Bergdorf Goodman, and Lord and Taylor’s all compete to out do each other to make the most magical and spectacular display. Have your own Miracle on 34th Street moment!
5. Go Ice Skating! Get your skates on and go to the Wollman Rink in Central Park or Rockefeller Center (where you can skate around under the lights of the Christmas tree and Prometheus). The rinks at Bryant Park and Chelsea Piers are also great choices and not quite as busy.
4. Babbo is one of our favorite restaurants. Christmas Eve is something extra special though as Babbo hosts it’s traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes. They make the dinner a really special event and the food is magnificent.
3. The Nutcracker at the New York City Ballet. If you love the ballet, you will certainly be in heaven. If you never thought of yourself as a ballet type, this is the one to go to. Easy to follow, plenty of action, and the most amazing sets, costumes, and a one ton Christmas tree make this production a real stunner.
2. Christmas at the Bronx Zoo. The zoo is really special during the year, but at Christmas they feature over 100 illuminated sculptures, a holiday train, and lots of singing and entertainment. Not to mention the fabulous animals in their winter coats!
1. The tree lighting at Rockefeller Center. Whether this is your first December in NYC or you have been here your whole life, there are few sights more awe inspiring and magical than the annual lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Center.
